I am committed first and foremost, to being a hands-on urologist who is dedicated to high standards. As a Consultant Urological Surgeon I carry out 2.5 days of clinical activity per week. 95% of my personal surgical caseload relates to functional reconstruction of the urinary tract; the majority of which is comprised of secondary and tertiary reconstructive and urogynaecology referrals received at a local, regional and national level. Audit of my functional reconstructive work has outcomes equivalent to the best internationally renowned centres. I regularly attend departmental meetings and a regular multidisciplinary team meeting. I take part in regular teaching and educational commitments. I am the functional and reconstructive urology lead and also the research lead in my directorate. My background training was in urodynamics the Middlesex University College Hospital where my mentor Richard Turner-Warwick and his co-workers first described clinical urodynamics in 1969. My doctorate training was with Geoffrey Burnstock in the Department of Pharmacology at University College London, where I studied aspects of the autonomic innervation of the lower urinary tract and was granted a Doctorate in Medicine and awarded the university’s thesis prize for my work. Since then I have continued my interest in research. I have conducted a clinical and basic science research programme in functional urology in Sheffield since 1992. I have a number of other collaborations ongoing at present and am particularly fascinated by the ageing bladder and how this is related to the clinical functional problems we see in daily practice. In 2011, I was awarded the annual St Peter’s Medal by the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) for making a notable contribution to the advancement of urology. In 2015 I was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Society for Urodynamics, Female Urology and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU). I am the Secretary General of the European Association of Urology (EAU). In the past, I directed postgraduate education for the EAU for 8 years (with an annual budget of over €1.5m) and have been responsible for leading the EAU International Relations Office. I am current Clinical Patient Management System (CPMS) Implementation Leader and past Coordinator of the European Reference Network (ERN) for rare urogenital diseases and complex conditions (eUROGEN); a network of 29 healthcare providers across Europe. I led the development and submission of a successful European Union Marie Curie Framework 7 research grant (the TRUST programme) for €3.2m with my NHS Trust as the lead site. I was the urogenital lead for the NIHR 'Devices for Dignity' project. I chaired the NICE guidelines development committee on the management of male lower urinary tract symptoms. I have chaired two WHO Committees on clinical pharmacology. I have also chaired two international consultations on stricture disease and one on male lower urinary tract symptoms. From 2006-2016 I was the Editor in Chief of Neurourology and Urodynamics, the main subspecialist journal in continence research. I regularly peer review for journals and national funding bodies. I have contributed to over 750 papers in the peer-reviewed literature as well as several books and book chapters.
