Winning the CINP Brain Health Research Award is high recognition of your years of research. Looking at the current landscape, how would you describe the overall pace and direction of basic research on schizophrenia?

I believe we are in a remarkable era for precision psychiatry, given the ongoing search for biomarkers, the identification of novel therapeutic targets, and the potential development of new medications that will specifically address distinct brain changes, rather than targeting clinical symptoms or disease categories defined solely by psychiatric manuals. In this context, I think that investigating potential biomarkers and examining how environmental factors influence brain function will fundamentally transform our approach to treating mental health disorders, as well as substance use disorders, in the future.

It usually takes a long time for basic research findings to serve clinical practice. Based on your experience, what common difficulties exist in the clinical translation of schizophrenia research?

Romina Mizrahi 教授

There are numerous contributing factors to this phenomenon. One, of course, is economics, as well as the years required to translate a research finding into clinical practice. However, again, because of the rapid pace of social media and artificial intelligence, I believe that these factors, together with forthcoming regulatory changes, will accelerate the translation of basic research into clinical care far more quickly than has been previously possible. Of course, this will also require changes in regulatory frameworks, which I think will themselves be influenced by AI. Overall, I believe we are at a promising moment in schizophrenia research.

Interdisciplinary integration has become a major trend, with neuroscience, immunology and imaging all contributing to schizophrenia research. What unique opportunities do you think cross-disciplinary cooperation will bring to this field?

I think this is amazing. It is an extraordinary time for us, because we will be able to integrate all levels of research, from preclinical to clinical, and with the support of artificial intelligence as well as human critical reasoning. We will be able to treat various mental health conditions, including substance use disorders, in ways that were not possible before. In this regard, I would like to thank the CINP again for this wonderful award, and also thank CCMTV for inviting me to give this presentation. I look forward to seeing all of you in Glasgow.
